The UNESCO Cities of Literature are a gateway to a wider global network of residency, travel and creative writing opportunities. These resources may help anyone interested in residency programmes across the 63 Cities of Literature.
DUNEDIN, NEW ZEALAND
The aim of the Caselberg Trust Margaret Egan Cities of Literature Writers Residency is to provide international and New Zealand writers an opportunity to work on a substantial piece of creative writing and to foster connections among creative writers in New Zealand and internationally.
HEIDELBERG, GERMANY
The Kulturstiftung Rhein-Neckar-Kreis e.V residency is a work grant awarded by the "Kulturstiftung Rhein-Neckar-Kreis e.V." in cooperation with the UNESCO City of Literature Heidelberg for authors from UNESCO Cities of Literature. It takes place in the “Commandant’s House Dilsberg”, at Dilsberg Fortress, in Neckargemünd.
NANJING, CHINA
The Nanjing International Writers Residency aims to bridge the city’s vibrant literary community with its international counterparts. Launched in 2019, this annual program has welcomed 30 writers, poets, and translators from the UNESCO Cities of Literature network. Each year, Nanjing offers 5–7 residencies to writers, poets, and translators, fostering cultural exchange and creative collaboration across borders.
PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC
Prague City of Literature has been running a residency program for international writers since 2015. The call for applications is announced each summer for the following year. Every year, up to ten two-month residencies are offered. The program provides accommodation in Kafka’s House, a monthly scholarship, and covers travel costs to and from Prague.
